So often my clients come to me and say:

"I feel like I am doing everything so well. Why am I still having such bad cravings?"

This is SO frustrating when you are working so hard at improving your health.

There can be so many variables and reasons that people have cravings. These are 6 common factors I have found to cause cravings…

1) Lack of sleep

Our brains need sleep.

A sleep deprived brain wants comfort and ease.

The easiest choice to make is to fall back into old habits which often include starchy sweet foods that quickly can disrupt our hormones and blood sugar levels. This can lead to a vicious cycle of lethargy, disrupted sleep, poor meal or snack choices and continued cravings.

2) Not balancing macronutrients and/or too few calories

I love the meal template for Whole30.

It gives a nice, clear, visual template of how to balance your plate. Not eating enough calories causes all kinds of problems. I find that people are "fat phobic" and are not including enough healthy fats in their meals.

Fat is GOOD for you! I promise! Eating fat helps us feel satiated, helps our body utilize fat as fuel, improves the taste of food and helps our hormones and blood sugar stay in better balance AND it helps squash cravings!

3) Not enough water

Did you know that if you are dehydrated your thirst often masks itself as hunger? It does!

The recommendation is to drink half your weight in ounces of water every day. Sometimes drinking tap water only is challenging for me, so having Whole30 Approved options like LaCroix, Spindrift and Waterloo sparkling waters help add variety. Having a variety of flavors takes the boredom out of drinking water!

I also like to add Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides to my water. It is a really easy way to get protein in while improving my joint health and skin! There are just some days when you can’t eat perfectly. Fats and veggies are usually pretty easy to find, even in the most remote places. Protein can be more difficult. I love the Vital Proteins single packs that I can throw in my purse or car for true emergencies. I always KNOW that with Collagen Peptides I am able to include protein in every meal, no matter where I am.

Often when people are bored we start to snack. Staying active, keeping our hands busy, calling a friend, journaling are all ways to combat boredom. Boredom can make us "think" we are hungry. This often leads to unnecessary snacking, excess calorie intake and overeating.

Before snacking ask yourself - “Do I feel hunger, or is it just restlessness?”

5) Skipping meals or going too long between meals

Not having an appetite at meals can be a sign that your hormones are disrupted. To improve hormone balance, start by eating around the same time every day, starting with breakfast. Yes. Breakfast truly is the most important meal of the day. Starting the day is a source of protein can help curb cravings throughout the morning. Check out some of my favorite recipes here.

Many people skip meals, hoping to minimize calorie intake. That usually backfires, increasing cravings and hunger triggers later in the day.

6) Stress, loneliness, anxiety and fear

We have gotten into the habit of literally "stuffing" our emotions.

Often, the stuffing we use is food. When you start to feel cravings pop up, do what I encourage my clients to do - stop.

Take a deep breath.

Take a moment to think about how you are feeling. What emotions are you feeling? Are you really hungry or are you trying to push down some uncomfortable feelings that you'd prefer to avoid? Having an awareness of how you are feeling can help you realize that you aren't actually hungry.

Do you struggle with cravings? Did you find yourself snacking out of habit, not hunger?

I have worked with hundreds of clients to help them gain control over their relationship with food and I'd love to work with you to help curb your cravings.

Imagine what you could fill your brain space with if you weren't always thinking of what you wanted to eat next…imagine feeling in total control of what you put into your body… food freedom is possible for you, and I would love to be a part of your journey!
