How Diet Impacts Hormones

Eating a balanced diet is incredibly important for so many reasons. One of the main benefits of eating a healthy diet is that you can lessen your chance of developing chronic health issues. Health problems like Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure can be the result of a Standard American Diet.

The foods you eat can either bring you closer to health, or create havoc in your body. Moving away from the SAD (Standard American Diet) and eating a variety of real food that is abundant in nutrients can make a direct positive impact on your health.

One of the most significant ways food improves your health is by stabilizing your hormones. I’m not necessarily talking about the hormones you may have initially thought of. While testosterone, progesterone and estrogen are definitely impacted by diet, in this article I’m talking about the hormones related to blood sugar.

The way our hormones are impacted by diet is very complex and difficult to explain. Today, I’m going to keep it really simple. If you want to do a deep dive around the complexities of this, I’d love to work with you! I totally geek out on this stuff and love to share what I’ve learned.

When you eat a real-food diet with a balance of nutrients, blood sugar levels are typically more stable.

A stable blood sugar level creates stable energy levels, and can actually turn your body into a fat burning machine!

When your body burns fat, metabolism is enhanced. Who doesn’t want the benefits of a strong metabolism?

Eating a nutrient rich, balanced diet also reduces food cravings which means that you can control your food choices instead of your cravings controlling you.

It’s amazing to know that the choices you make when you eat have a direct impact on your wellness.  It’s so empowering to understand that by simply choosing real food options, you can reduce your risk of chronic health issues!

Type II Diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol can be prevented through diet. Dr. Mark Hyman reports that “Science shows diabetes and obesity are preventable and reversible.” This gives me so much hope!

Now you are probably excited to find out what changes you can make to improve your health. It’s not as hard as you might think it is.

  1. Eat real food. If it comes from a plant or an animal, your body will recognize it as real food. When your body recognizes the food you are eating it absorbs the nutrients better and breaks the food down as it should.

  2. Eat three meals a day. An easy way to stabilize the hormones of your blood sugar is by eating 3 meals a day, starting with breakfast. Yes, your mom was right about this one!

  3. Balance your macronutrients. When you are building your plate, fill it up with vegetables (even at breakfast), protein and healthy fats. You don’t have to count carbs, calories or macronutrients when you build your plate this way.

  4. Don’t skip the healthy fat. Adding healthy fat to your diet is critical to blood sugar stabilization, metabolism enhancement, satiety and reducing cravings.

  5. Cut out processed foods. Foods that are processed are more likely to be high in unhealthy fats, sugar, and full of ingredients that our bodies don’t recognize. This can set us up on a blood sugar roller coaster and leads to cravings, inflammation and chronic health problems.

These tips are the easiest ways to improve your diet. Simply making these few changes can bring about tremendous health improvements. If you are ready to commit to a healthier lifestyle and are ready to dig deeper into more ways to prioritize your health, I’d love to work with you!
